Islais Bridge

Maker Space, Reconstitued Wetland

(Jury Prize Award for Spring 2018, Collaboration with Mia Candelaria)

2020 Selected Work for website29.jpg

This maker space rises on the former industrial site in Islais Creek adjacent to the famous Bayview Rise mural.

In response to sea level rise the original wetland is restored and the building is designed as a bridge-like structure to connect with the neighborhood. The bridge is the support infrastructure for the program (classrooms, offices, performance spaces and shops) held together by a permeable canopy that reads as a datum.

The geological past of the site is leveraged to safeguard its future against sea level rise. The industrial tectonic language of its surroundings imbues the project’s space with infrastructural qualities that are mediated by accommodating the restoring natural landscape.

The bridge becomes a connector for the urban and natural tissues of Islais Creek, ultimately elevating this depressed and deindustrialized part of the city.
