Los Angeles Center for Experimental Performing Arts

Performace Spaces - Theater - Public Spaces

This proposal for the Los Angeles Center of Experimental Performing Arts, located in downtown Los Angeles on South Broadway, questions the elements that make up a building and reinterprets them critically.

The structure is glorified: a superstructure that spans the site acts as the main support on which a dense lattice of scaffolding is hung.

The circulation is exasperated: it becomes a siphon that intercepts the passerby from the streetscape and jettisons them throughout the building, in doing so it vigorously makes its way throughout the scaffolding leaving in its wake the signs of its passage altering its morphology irremediably.

The performance spaces vary from promiscuous to secluded: these range from a main street level stage that interacts with the streetscape, to more secluded indoor theaters above, and finally a move intimate, ephemeral platform nestled within the scaffolding.

A scaffolding is hung from the superstructure...

...the circulation makes its way through it defining the various performance spaces...

...altering the system’s parametric morphology.
